Mead has been around for all of recorded time. There are references to mead production in Ancient Egypt and earlier. During the Middle Ages Mead production and consumption was at an all time high and of course the Vikings drink of choice was Mead.

Tradition has it that in ancient times a newlywed couple would be given a Moon’s (month) worth of honey (mead) to insure offspring. Hence the term ‘Honeymoon’ was born.

Sometimes called ‘Ambrosia’ or ‘Nectar of the Gods’, Mead is often made sweet. However, like any wine it can be made in many styles, including dry, semi-sweet and sweet.

Traditional Mead is made from Honey alone.

Mead made with fruit is called Melomel

Mead made with grapes is called Pyment

Mead made with apples / cider is called Cyser

Mead made with spices / herbs is called Metheglin

Anyway you look at it Mead is wine.
